bokchoy100Engineering of plant systems

The University of Cambridge has a long history as a centre for study of the natural history and function of plant systems. New initiatives continue to promote these activities in Cambridge. Interdisciplinary approaches to understanding the genetic and biophysical basis of morphogenesis are providing opportunities for rational design and engineering of new plant forms. The pages in this section provide links to recent research and web-based resources.

Journal: Cell The precise localization of extracellular matrix and cell wall components is of critical importance for multicellular organisms. Lignin is a major cell wall modification that often forms intricate subcellular patterns that are central to cellular function. Yet the mechanisms...

Publication Date: 2013 Mar 22 PMID: 23529069 Authors: Bates, P. D. - Stymne, S. - Ohlrogge, J. Journal: Curr Opin Plant Biol Oil produced in plant seeds is utilized as a major source of calories for human nutrition, as feedstocks for non-food uses such as soaps and polymers, and can serve as a high-energy biofuel. The biochemical pathways leading to oil (triacylglycerol) synthesis in seeds...

Publication Date: 2013 Mar 26 PMID: 23531846 Authors: Asada, T. Journal: Plant Cell Physiol The plane of symmetric plant cell division tends to be selected so that the new cross wall halving the cell volume has the least possible area, and several cases of such selection are best represented by a recently formulated model which promotes the view that the strength of the least area tendency is...

Journal: Plant Physiol The phytohormone auxin regulates virtually every aspect of plant development. The hormone directly mediates the interaction between the two members of the auxin co-receptor complex, a TIR1/AFB F-box protein and an Aux/IAA...

Peptide signaling presumably occupies a central role in plant development, yet only few concrete examples of receptor-ligand pairs that act in the context of specific differentiation processes have been described. Has anyone ever told you  that you had a head full of corncobs? Artist Klaus Weber created an anatomical model with organs made of vegetables. A celery heart makes a heart, potatoes serve as the intestines, and I believe that may be a big yam in place of the liver. Is this what vegans look like inside? There are some people who are just don’t know how to take care of plants. Or it might be that you’ve got some special plants in your house that need special care. It’s for reasons like that some designers decided to come up with this device, which allows you to detect the health of your plants.   An entry in the LiteOn Design Awards, The Plant Doctor was conceived by Fan Xu and Du...
