Synthetic biology: applications come of age

Synthetic biology was born just over a decade ago, with the goal of applying engineering principles to biological circuitry. The field has since made great strides, through the successful rewiring of gene and protein networks, signaling pathways, and genomes. Although research is still ongoing to identify new biological parts and to understand the design principles behind them, existing tools are already being used to address a variety of health and environmental problems.

The free Poster surveys the innovative ways in which synthetic biology devices are being applied — from sensing and responding to diverse environmental signals, to the identification of drug targets and the synthesis and delivery of therapeutics, to the production of biofuels, pharmaceuticals and novel biomaterials.
